The Little Lilypad is a lifestyle blog mostly written by a mum to two beautiful, cheeky and entertaining daughters. It is sometimes written by the Man on the Pad or by one of our baby bloggers. Occasionally we accept guest posts too. There is frequently talk of sustainable living, saving money, lifestyle and travel. It is hopefully helpful, sometimes funny and always honest.

  1. Fab Lab Review & Competition

    Posted on

Summer is finally here and the schools have now broken up for the holidays. You would think that this would be enough to put smiles on the childrens faces wouldn't you but in an effort to stave off the inevitable "I'm bored" chant, we have been fortunate enough to review the Interplay Fab Lab Festival Tattoo and Tie Dye Sets.

    IMG_4992

I thought that the teenager would love the festival tattoos as we have done a lot of festival glitter over the past few months but it was the 6 year old that was the biggest fan. They are so easy to apply that I found her cutting out the tattoos herself with the safety scissors provided and simply putting them on her skin, wetting with the sponge and voila, she has a tattoo!

    It really is that easy!

    IMG_4819

Applying the tattoos to her face obviously need a little more help and assistance but there is no tricky application or fiddly process, you very simply remove the plastic film from the image you select and then put onto your face (or other part of your body). Then wet the sponge provided and apply over the tattoo. It takes less than a minute for the tattoo to transfer onto the skin.

We have found the tattoos to be quite water resistent and some of them have lasted 4-5 days, whereas others were less so but you do need the removal oil to clear them off completely. I just hope that the bottle lasts for all the tattoos that are included!

The FabLab Festival Face Tattoos retail at £12.99, so is well priced and would make an ideal birthday gift too.

    * Easy to apply and easy to remove with the tattoo removal oil provided.

    * Also includes glitter tattoos to add sparkle and to customise your look!

    * Great fun to do and perfect for festivals, parties and sleepovers!

    * Contains no harmful chemicals. Fully tested and 100% non-toxic

The tie dye look has made a triumphant return, (I didn't know it had ever left to be honest) with vibrantly tie-dyed clothes featuring all over the NYFW, Milan and recent fashion show runways.  The FabLab Designer Tie Dye set has ingredients for 5 t-shirts with 4 bright colours.

This set is suitable for over 8 years of age so I set the teenager and her friend the task of trying it out. I purposefully left them to it and didn't intervene as I wanted to see just how easy it was (and to assess their ability to read instructions). They were delighted at the opportunity to tie dye their old school shirts following the end of term and set to work on creating a master piece.

I have to admit to being a little nervous but they protected the surfaces and themselves as ultimately it does contain chemicals so you need to be safe too. It is important not to let the chemicals to come into contact with any part of the body, particularly the mouth and eyes and to keep small children and animals away from the work area at all times.

The kit kept them busy for well over half an hour and it was great to see them creating and away from their phone screens for a while. (I will update this post with their final creations once they are dry)

The FabLab Designer Tie Dye Set is priced at a really affordable £9.99 and as it will make approx 5 shirts, it is great value for money.

    * It is fun and easy to do and the 8 page instruction booklet explains the techniques to get the latest trendy looks.

    * The Kit contains 4 dyes in applicator bottles, rubber bands and PVC lab gloves.

The abillity to create doesn't just stop at shirts and tshirts, you could do hats or anything you put your mind to (within reason I guess).

  2. Thumbs Up Roller Wheel Review & Giveaway

    Posted on

Do you remember when you were a child and there was nothing more entertaining than rolling down a hill and ending up laughing and laughing at the bottom because you were dizzy and out of breath? Fast forward a few years and the folk from Thumbs Up have devised the Thumbs Up Roller Wheel to bring you hours of fun, whether you have a hill or not!

    1054_INFLROLWHL_08

We found that the inflatable wheel comes complete with a collection of colourful balls inside that jiggle and bounce around as the wheel rotates, this interactive toy really captures kids' imaginations. What's more, because it's made from durable inflatable plastic, it's suitable for use both indoors and out - just be sure to use it on the grass if you're outside to avoid any potential punctures!

    1054_INFLROLWHL_00

The Roller Wheel comes with a manual foot pump but to be completely honest you might be there all day with it and if, like me, you have an impatient child who can't wait to get in the wheel, you might be better off choosing an electric pump like we did! It took around 2-3 minutes to fully inflate with the electric pump so not long at all.

    IMG_3743

As you can see, the delight on her face at being able to get inside the roller wheel and despite taking a little while to get to grips with it (i,e falling out a few times) she played it in for over an hour. Who knew so much fun could be had with an inflatable wheel?

    IMG_3745

My eldest daughter was not amused that she was too big to go in the Roller Wheel (there is a weight limit of 5 stone, 7lbs) but that didn't stop her from pushing her sister around. The really big "kid" (also known as my husband) loves being outside and as the little one is a secret adrenalin junkie, the pair of them loved rolling her around in the Roller Wheel.

    IMG_3757

If I am being completely honest, when I first opened the box I thought it might be a bit young for the 6 year old and a bit limited as to its use but I can safely say that she thinks it is brilliant and has even put the iPad aside to go outside and play, so the Roller Wheel gets my vote.

As well as being brilliant fun, the Roller Wheel also helps children sharpen skills like coordination, cooperative play, physical strength, visual and auditory stimulation and more. If you think your little one would love a Thumbs Up Roller Wheel, we are delighted to be able to give you the chance to win one! 3. Smart Ass Mini Game by University Games : Review & Giveaway

    Posted on

I have always loved a board game, ever since I was a child and now as my girls are getting older we frequently have "games night" when friends come over. In fact my youngest gets most put out if we don't play games at the weekends but that is another story.

We were recently asked if we would like to review the Smart Ass mini card game from University Games and we couldn't wait to try it out! So here is what we thought!

    IMG_3337

Have you ever played a game and been bursting to shout out the answer, even when its not your turn .... which incidentally is me in every game we play ...... well Smart Ass gives you the chance to shout out when you know the answer to the question. Each question has 10 clues, The first player to shout out the correct answer wins the round and takes a step closer to being the ultimate ‘Smart Ass’.

    IMG_3338

There are a selection of cards with four question categories: Who am I? Where am I? What am I? and Hard Ass! Each card has a selection of clues which get easier as more questions are being read out. As soon as you know the answer you need to shout it out and the person to guess the answer correctly first wins the round and the card.

If no one guesses correctly, the person reading the clues gets the card ..... so even if you are not a Smart Ass, there is still chance to win a card!

    IMG_3076

We have been playing the game over the weekend and it becomes more hilarious as the adults drink more and more alcohol but Smart Ass is the ultimate fun trivia game which is suitable for teens upwards. The questions are a little difficult for younger children, although my youngest daughter loved being on my "team" so younger children can still get involved, even if they wouldn't know the answers.

The rules state that the first player to answer four cards correctly (the cards can be any mixture of categories) is declared the winner but we carried on playing and the winner with the most cards at the end won. The game is so versatile that it can be as short or as long as you want it to be!

Smart Ass Mini Game retails for around £8 (depending on the retailer) but we are giving our lucky readers the chance to win a pack. It is ideal for taking on holidays or weekends away as it is only slightly larger than a normal pack of cards.

All you need to do is enter below to be in with a chance to win!

  4. BABY Born Interactive Sister : Baby Born Rain Fun Shower Giveaway

    Posted on

There is no doubt that we are huge baby doll fans, in fact you are not allowed to call them dolls in our house, they are babies! Most of the babies that we have are not interactive, so you can imagine the delight when we were given the opportunity to review the Baby Born Interactive Sister doll.

    Baby Born Sister Doll

BABY born Sister doll has six functions and ten accessories for fun interactive play, including lovely long hair that you can brush and style. She may be a little older than BABY born, but is the same height meaning they can mix and match their outfits. Our very own baby doll fanatic loves changing their outfits so often, she has found that tiny baby clothes can also fit her too.

    IMG_2751

The Baby Born Interactive Sister looks more grown up and she is able to stand on her own and bend her knees, can drink water, cry real tears and is fully bathable. If you check out our Instagram feed here, you can see how she cries! Her crying ability reminds me of a baby doll I had when I was younger, so it is a timeless classic in the making that never gets old.

My youngest daughter is naturally the cute little sister so she loved being in charge of the Baby Born Interactive Sister. She is particularly fond of the way her legs move, this is a great feature as many dolls have solid legs. Having movable legs mean that she sits naturally in a chair, so very often joins us for dinner!

Whilst being able to change the clothes of the Baby Born dolls, my daughter also appears to have more naked dolls than anything else (I can't be the only one whose daughter insists on getting all her dolls naked), so the addition of a shower to the range is perfect!

    IMG_2749

The BABY born Rain Fun Shower (RRP £42.99) mean that BABY born and BABY born Sister can now enjoy a real working shower with opening doors, an adjustable shower head, water flow regulator, harness to keep them safe, and towel.

As many baby dolls are not suitable to take in the bath tub, it is great that play time doesn't have to stop when it is bath time for the children (although as it has batteries, we are not recommending that you take the shower in with you too!)

The shower is suitable for children aged 3+ but there is definitely some parental supervision needed for assembly. Putting all the pieces of the shower together initially is not difficult but a little tricky and as there is water involved, I always feel the need to supervise or at least ensure it is not on a carpet anywhere!!

    IMG_2745 (1)

The shower requires 4 x AA batteries and you need to follow the instructions to make sure everything fits together and the water is filled to the correct levels but once it is, then the shower works like a dream. (although recommend a towel close by .... just in case

So if you have a little one who would love to try the Baby Born Rain Fun Shower, the kind folk at Zapf Creations are giving one lucky Lilypad reader the chance to do just that. All you need to do is enter below.
