  1. Win a Snowflake Brownie box .... just in time for Christmas

    Posted on

There is nothing like the smell of baking and nothing more fun (or stressful depending on your OCD levels) than baking with your children. When Gousto got in touch to say that  Goutso and BakedIn have collaborated with Michel Roux OBE to create a Christmas dessert for children, which is made up of a child-friendly recipe card, ingredients, icing sugar template and disposable baking tray, we couldn't resist.

    Gousto Snowflake

This is the perfect stocking-filler this Christmas and as it has been crafted by recipe delivery service Gousto and baking kit service BakedIn, assisted by Michel Roux OBE, it is perfect in its design. Designed specifically for children, this fun and festive recipe kit includes craft activities and step-by-step instructions written with little ones in mind.

    Gousto 4

Taste is not compromised. Belgian chocolate, cranberries, naturally-derived orange extract and pecan nuts are provided along with cocoa, self-raising flour, caster sugar and some icing sugar for decoration. Simply add an egg and some butter for a truly delicious dessert. I wasn't allowed to get involved and the 4 year old took control, with me simply reading the instructions (and dealing with the hot oven of course) but it just goes to show how easy the kit is to use.

    Gousto 1

All ingredients are pre-portioned and come in festive little bags. A silicone-coated baking tray with greaseproof paper to line is provided, along with a snowflake stencil to make an icing sugar template. (The 4 year old may have misunderstood the explanation of how to sprinke).

    Gousto 2

Gousto customers will be able to add a Snowflake Brownie to their order at checkout until Wednesday 23rd December and we have a discount code for those of you who would like a special discount! https://www.gousto.co.uk/RELISH

However, we are giving the Lilypad readers a chance to win one, all you need to do is enter below.

  3. Back To School : Win a back to school book bundle worth £100

Back to School! It seems like we have been talking about it since the children broke up from school but no matter how long those 7 weeks seem, they soon fly by and there is frantic last minute purchases that are apparently essential in a 10 year olds life!

She will be going into Year 6 this year so we will have the preparation for the dreaded SATS and although they are not the "be all and end all" of your child"s education, the National Tests (SATs) can potentially be quite stressful (for parents too). Providing your child with some simple "steps to success" will improve their confidence and help them to feel prepared.

So I am really pleased to be working with Collins this month, who have produced a parent guide that includes practical information or parents about each stage of their child’s education, as well as product recommendations for key stage. This is a FREE (we love free) guide that parents can download at www.collins.co.uk/parents

    Collins4Parents

There is some really useful on the website about talking to your child when they have finished their homework or revision tasks, asking questions like "How do you feel that went?" "Do you need any extra help?" "What areas are you still struggling with?"

They suggest that learning should be a fun process by trying to shape some of the key exam objectives around the interests of your child. For example, with percentages, fractions and word problems, why not take your child shopping (this works for me)? By connecting knowledge with experience, things start to "make sense" to children.

    Back to School : Collins

In addition to this great resource, Collins are also offering a 25% discount plus free P&P on the Collins Back to School range of books until 30 September 2015 using promo code SCHOOL25 which can be used on the colllins.co.uk website.

To ease your little ones back to school/to make life a little easier this back to school, Collins are giving away £100 worth of dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases and revision guides, tailored to your child’s school year. For your chance to win, simply answer the following question on the widget below:

  4. Ways For Parents To Monitor & Reward Their Children

    Posted on

It’s often said that you should never resort to buying the good graces of anyone – sadly this is a rule that never has and never will apply to kids! When it comes to younger children in particular, there’s really nothing wrong with ‘greasing the wheels’ from time to time to motivate positive behaviours. After all, it’s likely to be some time before the old ‘any good deed is its own reward’ adage means anything to them – in the meantime, making good with the more tangible rewards tends to work much better.

Of course there is a line to draw as to reward each and every positive thing any child does would be to instil a rather bad habit of then expecting too many rewards long-term. Nevertheless, in instances where habits are either hard to break or in any way difficult for younger kids to understand, a little deal-sweetener here and there can be a wonderful thing.

Brainwaves, the leading provider of high quality rewards for children (stickers, badges, certificates, stampers & pencils) have written the following article for our readers highlighting some areas of children’s activities that parents may like to monitor and encourage good practice through positive reinforcement.

    Cleanliness

For example, trying to explain to any younger child why it’s of such importance to practise good cleanliness habits can be tricky. This covers everything from the state they keep their room in, to their own personal hygiene and so on – all of which are lessons that aren’t learned overnight. These are therefore perfect examples of instances where positive behaviour could be grounds for a reward. For each night the little one keeps their room clean, she gets a sticker…for example. And if she gets five consecutive stickers in a row, she gets something even better – a badge, toy, etc. It’s a fantastic way of motivating positive habits, which once instilled have a delightful habit of sticking long-term.

     Messy Bedroom

    Table Manners

Believe it or not, it’s actually possible to make the subject of teaching better table manners fun for all involved. Just as soon as your kids are old enough to begin feeding themselves at the table, set them the challenge of not only finishing their whole meal, but doing so without spilling or splashing a drop. Invest in a simple sticker chart and give them a sticker for it each time they manage a clean meal. Then, just like above, every time they chalk up say ten clean dinners, they’re rewarded. This way, positive habits are encouraged by pure recognition, as opposed to being scolded for failure.

    Child Eating

    Social Interaction

In terms of social interaction, it’s important to nurture things like kindness, compassion and generosity in all kids - though this, again, can be difficult with words alone. Monitoring a child’s interaction with others therefore can be a great way of picking up on key points worthy of rewards. If there’s only one ice cream and he or she lets a friend have it, big gold star. If they let their friend use the slide or swings first, another gold star. Sharing their bag of crisps is another perfect reason for a reward. Again, you’re not looking to create a system where good deeds are only done for rewards, but to instead nurture the development of positive habits that will stick for life.

You’d be surprised how far a few stickers and badges might just get you!

We have therefore teamed up with Brainwaves to offer you a great prize of their Saver Cards and accompanying stickers. All you need to do is enter below.
