The Little Lilypad is a lifestyle blog mostly written by a mum to two beautiful, cheeky and entertaining daughters. It is sometimes written by the Man on the Pad or by one of our baby bloggers. Occasionally we accept guest posts too. There is frequently talk of sustainable living, saving money, lifestyle and travel. It is hopefully helpful, sometimes funny and always honest.

  1. Things I Owe My Parents

    Posted on

Their are lots of things I owe my parents for, (I recall a cut glass fruit bowl I broke circa 1988) but I recently said something to my daughter and recoiled when I realised I sounded exactly like my own mother! It apparently happens to the best of us and when I received an email with some anecdotes, I have put some more together and had to share them with you.

     1. My Parents taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE .

"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside.. I just finished cleaning."

     2. My Parents taught me RELIGION .

"You better pray that will come out of the carpet."

     3. My Parents taught me about TIME TRAVEL .

"If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week!"

     4. My Parents taught me LOGIC .

    " Because I said so, that's why."

     5. My Parents taught me MORE LOGIC ..

"If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me."

     6. My Parents taught me FORESIGHT .

"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident."

     7. My Parents taught me IRONY .

"Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about."

     8. My Parents taught me about the science of OSMOSIS .

"Shut your mouth and eat your supper."

     9. My Parents taught me about CONTORTIONISM .

"Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!"

     10. My Parents taught me about STAMINA .

"You'll sit there until all that spinach is gone."

     11. My Parents taught me about WEATHER .

"This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it."

     12. My Parents taught me about HYPOCRISY .

"If I told you once, I've told you a million times. Don't exaggerate!"

     13. My Parents taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE .

"I brought you into this world, and I can take you out.."

     14. My Parents taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION .

    "Stop acting like your father!"

     15. My Parents taught me about ENVY .

"There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do."

     16. My Parents taught me about ANTICIPATION .

"Just wait until we get home."

     17. My Parents taught me about RECEIVING .

"You are going to get it when you get home!"

     18. My Parents taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE .

"If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way."

     19. My Parents taught me ESP .

"Put your sweater on; don't you think I know when you are cold?"

     20. My Parents taught me HUMOR.

"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."

     21. My Parents taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT .

"If you don't eat your vegetables, you'll never grow up."

     22. My Parents taught me GENETICS .

    "You're just like your father."

     23. My Parents taught me about my ROOTS .

"Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were born in a barn?"

     24. My Parents taught me WISDOM .

"When you get to be my age, you'll understand."

And my favorite: 25. My Parents taught me about JUSTICE .

"One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!

I cant claim that I wrote all of these but can relate to most of them! What did your parents teach you??

  2. What makes Britain Great?

    Posted on

The Lilypad Team are very proud to be British, we do our utmost to stock UK products made by hard working British craftsmen and women. So I was really surprised last night to see some disdain on both Facebook and Twitter about taking pride in the Olympics and Team GB.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics opening ceremony (although I have to admit to watching alot of it on demand this morning as I couldnt keep my eyes open) and I thought its depiction of Britain through the ages was a unique adaptation, made into an amazing spectacle.

     Olympic Rings

London was on centre stage and it didnt dissapoint us but what was dissapointing was those that chose to represent Team GB, but not to sing the National Anthem. There seems to be a shame in being proud of your heritage and whether you are English, Welsh, Scottish or even from Hogwarts, shouldnt you take pride in being part of your country's legacy?

There has been significant talk about the cost to this country and according to the Metro, David Cameron commented yesterday that "This is a time of some economic difficulty for the UK but look at what we are capable of achieving as a nation, even at a difficult economic time"  Its true that the Olympics has been more than a little expensive (cough) but the revenue and platform it has given to companies and the country will surely outweigh this. The fact that Stratford, Worcestershire and Warwickshire were the highest attended Torch relay events (some 74% of the population) demonstrates our pride and commitment to these games and what it symbolises to the UK.

Its very easy to get caught up in our day to day lives and become consumed with the little things that surround our lives but the Opening Ceremony last night showed what Britain has come through over the years and this little Island is still here, standing proud. We have survived World Wars, gone through severe recessions but in the end, 15,000 people volunteered to be part of last night and that just shows that it is the people of this country that make Britain great!

  3. Getting back into shape after having a baby : Academy 4 Wellbeing

    Posted on

Okay so after 2 children I cant say that my stomach is toned and ripped ( but then again I cant say with conviction that it ever was ) but unless you are a movie star with a dietitian and a personal trainer, most new mums dont have the time or the inclination to go through rigorous exercise regimes. Most of us feel lucky just to get through the day, so when I had an email about the Academy for Wellbeing, I was more than a little intrigued.

The Academy 4 Wellbeing is a brand new weight-loss retreat designed to transform lives. They have recognised that many new mums find it hard to get back into shape after the birth of their little ones, however, I am told that the Academy 4 Wellbeing will give guests the skills and knowledge to improve their entire wellbeing; from health and fitness, to nutrition and weight loss.

The Academy 4 Wellbeing is opening its door for the first time in September 2012.  Prices start at £995 for a seven day stay, so its not the cheapest option around but they firmly believe that the lessons you will learn in this week will stay with you for life ..... so if you divide £995 by another 40 years of your life - it equates to less than £25 a year,  which has got to be cheaper than weekly weight loss meetings?

    Academy4Wellbeing

I was given the opportunity to visit the Academy 4 Wellbeing but due to other commitments, I couldnt go (and my wellbeing is cursing me for it), so I am not recommending this on personal experience, nor am I offering any form of endorsement. What I am saying is that it looks like a fantastic kick start to physical and emotional wellbeing .... and what mum wouldnt love the opportunity for a seven day break. So *if* you get the chance to go - please let us know what you think! We would love to hear about it.
