The Little Lilypad is a lifestyle blog mostly written by a mum to two beautiful, cheeky and entertaining daughters. It is sometimes written by the Man on the Pad or by one of our baby bloggers. Occasionally we accept guest posts too. There is frequently talk of sustainable living, saving money, lifestyle and travel. It is hopefully helpful, sometimes funny and always honest.

The Accidental Gambole (Forward Roll)

Since childhood, we have always called a forward roll a gambole but as I have grown older (ahem), I have learnt that this terminology is a very "midlands" thing.

The reason I am telling you this is because my darling daughter got out of bed this evening (after she was supposed to be asleep) and said "mommy I have hurt my bottom" When I questioned her about this, she said "well, I accidentally did a gambole and bumped my bottom on my headboard" Trust me when I say that it took every ounce of strength not to burst out laughing!!

I suggested that maybe she should try very hard not to accidentally gambole around her bed and maybe try going to sleep! She agreed, kissed me good night and went back to bed.

The gift of children is truly unique, as is apparently some dialect! Do you have words that have others puzzled or is it really just a "midlands" thing??

  1. Aww that is very cute :) We have a word that sometimes leaves people puzzled and that's "Di". It actually means Grandad :)

  2. Lol - A tippletail! Someone thought I was bonkers the other day when I used this instead of a forward roll. Come to think about it I was however describing the fact that I could no longer do tippletails - this may be more of a reason why she thought I was bonkers. (just imagine it, a 32 year old mum of two trying to tippletail around the house - I know what you're all thinking now - bonkers!!!) xx
