Occasionally we accept guest posts too. There is frequently talk of sustainable living, saving money, lifestyle and travel. It is hopefully helpful, sometimes funny and always honest.

How safe are your children online?

Today is Safer Internet Day, so how safe are you and your children online?

We all try to keep our lives private but with the age of Facebook when friends share photos and locations online, it becomes easier for people to track our lives, for the good and the bad!safer-internet-day2012

When I was growing up, we didnt have the internet, we were so excited when my brother received a Sega Megadrive as a Christmas gift but my children have access to our laptops and blackberry and the 6 year old knows how to use the ipod better than me. Whilst confidence with technology is great, it also comes with its pitfalls.  People can pretend to be someone they are not online, there are some unscrupulous people that prey on children and trusting adults too so increasing awareness and security is at the forefront of parents minds.

I spend far too much time on my laptop (like now) and my blackberry (like always), so maybe when I have time with my children, I should turn the technology off and remember this poem (edited)

I hope my children look back on today

And remember a Mother who had time to play

Children grow up while you're not looking

There'll be years ahead for computers, cleaning and cooking

So quiet now facebook and dust, go to sleep

I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

  1. I remember how much trouble the school email system could be even back then. I think it is important to try to teach your children about the pitfalls of the Internet as well as reminding ourselves of the joys of life without it (books, board games, cards etc).
