The Little Lilypad is a lifestyle blog mostly written by a mum to two beautiful, cheeky and entertaining daughters. It is sometimes written by the Man on the Pad or by one of our baby bloggers. Occasionally we accept guest posts too. There is frequently talk of sustainable living, saving money, lifestyle and travel. It is hopefully helpful, sometimes funny and always honest.

  1. Quite recently I posted about my notoriousl "hate basket" but hate leaves a horrible taste in my mouth and positive affimations and a sunny disposition sit much better with me. Once upon a time a friend of mine bought me a hand decorated Pot of Dreams and I have loved filling it, without the ability to raid it at every opportunity. As I was growing up, I remember my Nan opening a savings account at the local Natwest branch and my brother and I steadily saving so that we could see who could get the next "piggy" money box first, so I have always loved money boxes!

The poem that goes with each Pot of Dreams is:

When the first pound goes in

Make a wish and its time to begin

Savings for all that you yearn for

When the pots full to the top,

    Its finally time to stop!

    Broken open, money will pour,

For all your dreams and more!

    Pot of Dreams

Having a pot of dreams is much more productive than a hate basket, they are real for one, well made for two, and apparently if you fill it with £2 coins, they can hold up to £1000! That may be a lot of loose change but maybe just maybe change is all you need?

    What will you wish for?

  2. Most of our regular followers will know that we are huge ambassadors of charities that support children, so when we were asked to highlight a specific case for the Make A Wish Foundation, we were happy to do so. Make-A-Wish UK grants wishes to poorly children and most of us wish for something most days of our lives but what if those days werent guaranteed, wouldnt you want someone else to help make your wish come true.

Back in the summer of 2010 Make-A-Wish UK granted the wish of five year old May who was fighting a rare cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma – she wished to be a princess for the day. Sadly May passed away just a couple of months after her wish, two years ago today, on 31st August 2010.

May’s family have been involved with Make-A-Wish ever since, raising as much money as they can to ensure that other families going through the same awful experience can have their wish. May’s Dad, Neil, has made this short video and would like as many people as possible to watch it and support Make-A-Wish:

It's only a minute or so long, so please watch the video if you have a moment to spare. And if you could share it with as many people as you can it would mean so much to Neil and his family. If you are able to make a donation too, to help grant a wish to another child like May, you can ‘Remember May’ at www.justgiving.com/RememberMay.

This is not a sponsored post but we just wanted to share ....

  3. In a time BC (before children) there were many things I said repeatedly, such as "what are we doing on Friday night"  or "shall buy this top in both colours" but now in AD, (after dilation), my seemingly most common phrase at the moment is "Dont eat the cat biscuits" or "Get your hands out of the toilet".

I have to admit at some point in my distant past, I *may* have tasted a cat biscuit and let me assure those of you that havent tried them, they are awful. I am sure that they are considered delicious to our feline friends who usually have mouse on the menu but to human beings, this is certainly not a delicacy of choice!

Now ever since we found crawling a few months ago, the littlest daughter has decided she has a penchant for the cat biscuits in the kitchen and it really doesnt matter what flavour. At first I thought she may try them and spit them out but oh no, she scuttles across the floor like she is on a military mission and dives on the cat bowl. She is not a frail baby girl and definately not underfed, so her desire to gobble the cat biscuits remains a mystery!

Now on the subject of mysteries, what delights could the toilet bowl hold that simply grips the facination of an 11 month old baby? My love of bleach has had to go on hold for the moment, through sheer fear of her dipping her hands in the toilet but am still baffled as to what is so intriguing. Thankfully everyone now remembers to put the toilet seat down ..... so maybe the little one's facination with the toilet does have its advantages after all!

  4. We were supposed to be going on a picnic today but typically the rain stops play! Normally a little bit of rain wouldnt bother me too much but I really didnt fancy sitting on the wet grass and trying to amuse the 11 month old whilst the 7 year old ran around in the puddles. I cant actually say this is my idea of fun.

    So what do we do?

Before 10am, the 7 year old had already watched a movie with snacks on the sofa but I didnt want her staring at the TV screen all day, so we decided to go through some old birthday cards. I have somehow inherited my mums incessant need to keep birthday cards for every single, birthday, christmas, valentines, new home ...... you get the picture and I realised that the majority of these cards would probably be better served as crafts for my eldest daughter. So we have a pile of cards and have been cutting out the cute pictures and details so that she can make some pictures and cards for the family!

Apparently later on we shall still be having our picnic, on the lounge floor .... accompanied by some dolls and bears for a teddy bears picnic ( I am a little worried that I dont have enough food to feed all the dolls and bears ) so that should be fun! The baby loves to "wrestle" with her sisters toys, so I will probably be playing referee for a while too!

But I dont think I should worry too much about a food shortage as rice krispie cakes are next on the agenda, then there is all the board games we have in our cupboards and apparently I need to get off the computer so that my eldest can check her Moshi Monster Zoo???

So my main worry about things to do in the rain, is that we actually have too much to do .... so I really dont mind if it rains tomorrow!

(disclaimer - would ACTUALLY prefer sunshine).

    When rain stops play!

On the flip side, if you really dont want the rain to stop the play for the children, then the range of cute waterproof kids jackets from muddy puddles will help your day to not be ruined.
